Who can get an ISIC card?

If you are a full-time student at school, college or university, aged 12 or over, you can apply for a student card with ISIC. It's a hassle-free process, and in no time at all you'll be enjoying thousands of discounts and benefits at home and away.

As a general guideline students must be studying in a Secondary School, University, Polytechnic, or College or educated at a recognised education institution for a minimum of 12 weeks and have at least 12 hours of contact time per week to be considered as a full time student.

Which documents do I need to get an ISIC card?

The ISIC card is only for full-time students, so you need to bring one of the following documents and a recent passport size photo to your closest STA Travel or ISIC Issuing Branch:

This could be one of the following documents:

  • A document that proves that you are currently studying full time at a recognised school, college or university.
  • A copy of your university or student card, which is dated and clearly indicates you are currently a full-time student.
  • A signed and dated letter on official university or school stationery, which states you are a full-time student. We would prefer an original copy, but photocopies and faxes may be acceptable and an official proof of your date of birth (ie. passport, drivers license or birth certificate).

Definition of a full-time student

The definition of full-time student usually means at least 15 hours of study a week, for a minimum of six months a year.

If you are a full-time teacher or aged under 26, you can also enjoy similar benefits to the ISIC card with the International Youth Identity Card (IYTC card) or the International Teachers Identity Card (ITIC).

How long is the ISIC student card valid for?

The standard ISIC card is valid for 16 months, from the start of the academic year.

In New Zealand, the current card is valid from December 2009 until March 2011, (All cards purchased after November 16th 2009 will have a end date of March 2011).

Co-branded cards have a validity of 12 months from issue, click here for more information on co-branded cards.

Where can I get my ISIC card?

You can simply apply ONLINE, visit a STA Travel branch or an ISIC Issuing office closest to you to get your ISIC card issued. All you have to do is, bring proof that you're a student, and don't forget a passport-sized photo.

How much does an ISIC card cost?

The price of an ISIC card is only RRP $25.00 NZ - nothing compared to the hundreds of dollars you will save!

I'm not a student any more – is there a card for me?

Youth

Anyone under 26 can get an International Youth Travel Card (IYTC), which gives you access to similar offers to the ISIC card.

Teachers

If you've left your student years behind you and now work full-time as a teacher or professor, the International Teacher Identity Card (ITIC) also gives you great discounts and services.

You can get your IYTC and ITIC cards at the same places that issue the ISIC card.

Why does the new ISIC student card look different?

We've re-designed the International Student Identity Card to make it even more fresh and distinctive, reflecting the fact that it is a student lifestyle card as well as student ID.
